Ghat
Ghat
The ancient trading centre of Ghat is one of the most attractive of the Libyan oasis towns. Ghat is an important tourist destination due to the existence of prehistoric rock paintings and engravings in the neighbouring Tadrart Acacus and Tassili N'Ajjer mountains, in addition to the beauty of the surrounding desert landscapes. A major tourist attraction in the town itself is the Fortress of Ghat, Koukemen.
Ghat is living town with a bustling energy that is hard to resist. Nearby borders have not been impediments to the town forming strong links with the oases of neighbouring Algeria and Niger. As result, this is one place where you are more likely to come across French being spoken rather than English.
New Year is great time to fly to Ghat, the Acacus Festival sometimes includes a spectacular sunset concert among the cathedral, it is also and excellent opportunity to see performances of Tuareg dancing.
